Officer Ryan Harmon has been a blessing to the program. The Police Departments from the five communities are involved with the program. Juvenile offenders have completed 6, community service hours. At the same time participating youth increase respect for themselves, schools, law enforcement, the community and the legal system. Youth Court members will assume the following roles, on a rotating basis. The ability of the PCYDC to conference and share with similar organizations, learn new strategies and find even better ways to promote and protect youth in our community is an advantage in this complicated and fast changing world. Training in Colonie Youth Court continues every September, with between 40 and 50 student members enrolling every year.
Colonie Youth Court was one of three courts featured in a nationwide teleconference on youth courts sponsored by the United States Department of Justice and hosted by the University of Kentucky at Lexington. Teen Court serves as a prevention program for teen volunteers as well as Teen Court defendants. What are Youth Court membership requirements? A youth charged with an offense has the opportunity to forgo the hearing and sentencing procedures of juvenile court and agrees to a sentencing forum with a jury of the youth's peers. By agreeing to proceed in Youth Court, an offender obtains certain benefits, and waives certain rights that otherwise would attach in traditional criminal justice proceedings. The Board is assisted by a Citizens Advisory Board also made up of community officials and citizen volunteers. The Centennial Youth Commission meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month.
